We get it – bringing your car in after an accident is the worst. You now have expenses you weren’t planning for and worse, time without your car. If your car is brought into the shop after an accident for repairs, the only good news you may find is that it hasn’t been totaled. But, it probably means you could go longer than a few days without your car in your driveway. If you don’t have a second car to use or anyone to lend a hand, you may be stuck trying to find a rental car at the last minute. At Paul Bros. Auto Body shop, we get the question, “can I get a rental car while my car’s in the shop” all the time by our customers. But not everyone knows what happens during that process. Today, we’re going to answer that question for you!
Can I Get a Rental Car While My Car’s in the Shop?
Understanding your insurance claim…
Typically, when you’re in an accident and you weren’t the one responsible, there is “negligent driver’s insurance.” The other person’s insurance company is in charge of handling not just the repair costs, but these rental costs as part of the settlement agreed on.
If you are the cause of the accident, were in a hit-and-run-situation, or the all too common West Philadelphia troubles of fender benders and side-swipes, your own insurance will most likely cover the damage. The only way to find out if rental costs are covered under your own insurance is to call and ask your provider. If they do actually cover it then you’re set!
Filing with the Negligent Driver’s Insurance Company vs. Your Own
There are a few things to consider before you ask your insurance company, “can I get a rental car while my car’s in the shop?” You should first decide if you are going to file a claim with the negligent driver’s insurance company (if applicable), or if it’s worth it to file with your own company. Here are some of the pros and cons to consider:
- If you purchased rental car insurance, great! But whatever you purchased as part of your plan is the amount applicable for coverage. There’s usually a maximum amount set for rental cars that your insurance will pay each day you are using a rental car. This could leave you stuck paying more out of pocket if your car is in the shop longer than you expected.
- If you file with the negligent driver’s company, they are required to pay for your rental car while your car is in the shop. There usually isn’t a fixed number of days for the coverage like we mentioned above with your own company.
- Filing with your own insurance company usually takes much less time for processing and you can get a rental car a lot faster. What stinks about filing with the other driver’s insurance company is the amount of time. Other insurance companies can take forever to investigate your claim thoroughly. The amount of time it takes for them to authorize a rental car, you could be taking the bus for days or even longer!
How Paul Bros. Auto Body Can Help
As we mentioned, we get asked, “can I get a rental car while my car’s in the shop,” all the time here at Paul Bros. And the truth is, yes! But one thing that’s great for West Philadelphia and University City drivers is having rental cars available at the shop you visit. Not many smaller auto body shops can offer rental cars on the same day you bring your car into the shop, but we can. At our shop, we offer shuttles and rental cars to get you where you need to go.
One of the things we love most about living and working in the city is how close everything is, especially with the many transportation options. Because we’re so close to Temple University, Penn, Drexel, St. Joes, and hospitals like CHOP and Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, we can provide a shuttle that leaves every half hour right from our shop. Choosing a shuttle might be a better option for you if your car is not going to be in our shop for long and you want to save some extra money.
If your auto repair is going to take several days or longer, and your insurance policy allows for a rental, we can help you out! We have contracts with Enterprise and Hertz Rental cars to hook you up. You can typically get a car that is comparable to your original vehicle, but usually, insurance companies want to go the cheaper route. This may mean you get a car slightly smaller and cheaper. However, if you filed with the negligent driver’s insurance company, you may be entitled to a car that is more comparable to your own.
When you rent with Paul Bros., the rental car will pick you up at our shop and take you straight to the rental facility. Your paperwork can be done in a few minutes and you’ll be on your way! There’s no more asking, “can I get a rental car,” and waiting forever to get one. If you have more questions about renting a car while your car is in the shop, let us know!
